The 2009 NGDI Program

“Sustainable Living”

The 2009 Next Generation Design Institute project will be a 1,600 square foot single-family dwelling designed using sustainable design strategies. Each group will select five of the strategies listed below and incorporate them into their designs. One of the strategies will be required to be site-related. Each group will be required to discuss the strategies that they select as part of the final presentations as well as the design development reviews.

Each group’s dwelling unit can be up to two stories and will be comprised of a Garage (1- or 2-car), Living Space, Dining Space, Kitchen with Pantry, Utility Room, Master Bedroom with Master Bath and Closet, two additional Bedrooms with Closets and a common restroom and shower.

At the final presentation, each group will be required to have a Site Plan, Floor Plans (one per floor), at least two Elevations, one Enlarged Detail of a sustainable strategy that is a part of the project, a rendered Perspective and a Project Narrative. The site that each group will be building on will be adjacent to a common green space, and all attempts shall be made to incorporate this space into the site and sustainable strategies.

Each group will be building a mass model of the dwelling unit while visiting the College of Architecture on the campus of Texas Tech University. Each group will have the opportunity to utilize the College’s model building shops and advanced computer labs to prepare the final presentation and models.
